Get fit ANYTIME, don’t wait for the new year


Why wait until a “special” occasion or the new year to get healthy. Being healthy is not a destination but should be a life long journey for your overall physical and mental health.

Below are a few tips you can use to guide you to make lasting lifestyle changes. And the great thing about it, you can start them at any time of the year.

  • Get an annual medical checkup even if you don’t have any underline condition. Visit your doctor more regularly if you have any chronic illness like Diabetes or High Blood Pressure. Be sure to get the go-ahead from your doctor before starting any strenuous exercise program if you are not a very active person.
  • Stay active with an exercise routine, whether with a group, going to a gym or on your own.
  • Write down your short term and long term fitness goals and keep a food journal so you can track your progress.
  • Stay motivated, get help if you are having a hard time by yourself. Most of all have fun however you decide to stay active. Try to do things you enjoy, bike riding, swimming, dancing, aerobics, boxing just to name a few.
  • Drink at least 2 litres of water daily. Drink at least 1 glass first thing in the morning and at least 1 glass last thing at night. If you are having a hard time with the bland taste try enhancing the taste with fresh fruits but plain water is preferred.
  • When exercising always warm up and cool down before and after your routine.
  • To improve your overall health increase your fruit and vegetable intake, preferably fresh (not from a can or package) and when possible locally grown vegetables free from excessive use of pesticides and herbicides.
  • Avoid when possible or at minimum decrease stress, alcohol and smoking as these can affect your body and your mood.
  • Try to eat regular, healthy meals and snacks. Limit animal fat, dairy products and refined starches.
  • Get adequate sleep every day, at least 6-8 hrs sleep nightly to maximize your overall health and feelings.

    Just wanted your advice about something, I’d really appreciate if you could answer. Due to staying at home for the past few months, I have fallen into the habit of waking up at noon and going to sleep around 2 am. I do try to get back into routine but that’s not happening because of a lack of motivation. I want to know if this waking and sleeping late will have long term consequences on my body? Thanks!

    1. Hello K.T. Thanks for following. Studies have shown that persons who have sleeping patterns out side of what is considered normal, are at higher risks of developing certain conditions. That being said, I would advise that you get a general check up with your doctor to rule out any underline problem(s). If your doctor gives you a clean bill of health then you will have to explore the reasons for the change of sleeping habit and the lack of motivation eg, are you tired or worried? etc. Hope this helps.
